It easily becomes the fastest external drive we have ever tested but does it validate the move to USB 3.0? Storage - May 11, 2010 | 02:00 PM When comparing the world of SSDs to spindle-based storage it is easy to just dismiss the SSDs due to price and capacity or to dismiss standard drives based on performance. What if you are looking for a really high end solution for something like...a video editing machine? Do arrays of either technology make a difference worth noting? Stop in to see our quick experimenting. Storage - May 10, 2010 | 02:00 PM In an attempt to bring down the cost/GB of their Vertex 2 and Agility 2 products, OCZ has been futzing with the SandForce controller's firmware for the past few weeks. They managed to unlock an additional 20% capacity, but how will this impact performance? They just passed us a prototype sample, so lets find out! Storage - Apr 30, 2010 | 12:00 AM Super Talent is the first vendor to send us a USB 3.0-ready thumb drive. Not only does it offer speeds as high as 230 MB/s in our testing but it also includes support for hardware AES encryption. Are you prepared for a thumb drive that is faster than your hard drive and maybe even faster than your SATA SSD? Storage - Apr 28, 2010 | 09:00 PM Since the Vertex LE hit the streets a couple of months back, we've been waiting for a larger market push of the excellent SandForce controller. Today we review three new models that have just arrived on the market, comparing offerings from both Corsair and OCZ. Storage - Apr 14, 2010 | 04:00 PM A recent article on the topic of SSD performance of various controllers in AHCI vs. IDE mode caught the attention of our storage editor. This editorial serves as a rebuttal to those findings and should help clarify any lingering questions users might have about whether or not they should be running their system in AHCI or IDE mode. Storage - Apr 06, 2010 | 08:00 AM Today we take a look at the new 600GB VelociRaptor from Western Digital. The new drive looks just like it's older brother, with similar noise levels and power consumption. It may look and sound the same, but this new drive packs some additional punch in both speed and cost/GB. Check out our full review for the scoop. Storage - Mar 24, 2010 | 10:00 PM Today we take a look at the new Plextor SSD line. These drives use a lower-cost Marvell controller in an attempt to bring the price down. Will the performance be good enough to compete with the big boys? Read our full performance review for the scoop. Storage - Mar 23, 2010 | 12:00 PM If you are looking to upgrade your computer with USB 3.0 or SATA 6G support, you can either upgrade your system board or add in a expansion card like one of the two we are looking at today. The U3N2 and the S6M2 use controllers we are well familiar with to get the job done but in smaller and less expensive packages. Storage - Mar 03, 2010 | 08:00 AM Yes, you heard us right, we put "Western Digital" and "SSD" in the same sentence! For a first-in-industry move, a Hard Disk manufacturer has taken the Solid State plunge. We'll put this new unit to the test and see how it stacks up against the fierce competition in this arena. Storage - Feb 19, 2010 | 12:00 PM OCZ worked tirelessly to bring their new Vertex LE to market, so we worked tirelessly to bring you the first full review of a retail unit. How does this slightly pared-down unit stack up against the Vertex 2 Pro we evaluated after CES? Read our full evaluation to find out! Storage - Feb 17, 2010 | 10:00 PM Our storage guru takes a look at the revived SSDNow V Series (second generation) line. These drives sport Toshiba flash and a new controller from JMicron. We size up a 128GB model to see how it stacks up against the competition, as well as taking a look at the available Notebook Upgrade Kit. Storage - Feb 14, 2010 | 07:00 PM Today we look at Western Digital's first entry into the SATA 6Gb/sec arena with their new Caviar Black 1TB. This new drive borrows some features previously available in their enterprise offerings and hopes to be a worthy contender. How will the doubling of interface throughput impact performance? Satisfy your curiosity inside! Storage - Feb 01, 2010 | 11:00 AM Our storage guru took a stroll through a state of the art flash memory plant in Lehi, Utah. This plant, dubbed 'IM Flash Technologies', is jointly run by both Intel and Micron. Together they have announced the smallest production transistor process on the planet, and are now in volume production of this new 25nm flash memory. Allyn came back with some sweet pics, so check it out already! Storage - Jan 14, 2010 | 12:00 AM Allyn came back from CES with a pre-release Vertex 2 Pro from OCZ. This new drive comes equipped with a previously unknown Sandforce controller, which gave us some shocking results, especially in the areas of IOPS scaling and fragmentation-over-time. Check out his detailed review for the full scoop. Storage - Dec 11, 2009 | 01:00 PM We have the world's first SATA 6G (6.0 Gb/s) SSD in house in prototype form for benchmarking! Though our testing options were somewhat limited due to the prototype being a read-only piece of hardware, it has proven to us that SSDs are going to be separating themselves from standard hard drives even further in 2010. Storage - Nov 24, 2009 | 02:00 PM Allyn spent the better part of the last three months banging away at a DroboPro, digging into every possible feature and doing his best to try and get it to lose data.
